Motivation is Motivation

Yet a big difference exists

Between climbing up a flight of stairs

And looking like you can climb a flight of stairs

If all you're doing is looking the part - By definition that makes you a "Poser"

I don't know about you
But in my generation
Being called a poser
Was a huge insult

I don't care what you look like
I care what you can do
That's a big difference

Huge

Is this guy posing or did he win

There are high impact activities
They involve a lot of jumping around
Or crashing into things or risk of collision

Then there is swim which is different

Nothing is elbowing you in the ribs
There is no need to squat down
Or behave like a happy baby

Doing exactly that in yoga - and doing "rag doll"
Are two of the best poses in all of yoga
So it's not that I dislike poses
That's not even partly true
I love healing poses

I dislike posers in the sense
That some people would rather
Look like they are wearing capes
Compared to some other stronger people
Who would like to be flying through their lives

Swim is considered very low impact
Even though it can cause injury
You can easily hurt yourself
By working with wrong form

You can easily work yourself
Into being every bit as wounded
As if you were in a car accident
Let that sit in for a moment, please

By slowly wearing away your shoulder
By exerting too far at distance
You can debilitate yourself
Don't do that - please

Love that keyhole like your shoulder is depending on it while facing an oncoming head-on collision

As a 20-year sports coach
I'm keenly aware of a few ironies

The biggest irony I've seen over the years is this
Athletes try to do all kinds of different things
Dribble a basketball - throw a horseshoe

They don't really care what they look like
They have an end goal in mind
The goal doesn't matter

The goal might be - make the basketball
Go through the rim - without having your shot blocked
Don't confuse the goal with the camera image of attempting the goal

Some people say - "I'm not athletic"
What a bunch of tomfoolery - I do not accept this statement
No one is athletic - until they start trying - to do these funky challenges

Watching a game and understanding the purpose or goal
Is so different than watching a game and noticing
Who is playing and what they look like

I'm about to share with you something incredibly profound

There are three things you will be hated for, no matter what
Sorry to be the one to break it to you - this was life changing for me

Take a moment to deeply consider each of the following of what I'm about to say
Then think about who would love you or dislike you more for each of the following

  1. Health-wealth - Looking healthy is a source of guaranteed contempt, brace for it
  2. Looks - If you are a scorching hot smokeshow, it counts against you in some way
  3. Happiness with your lease on life - Walking with pep in your step causes mayhem

That's the thing - I'll repeat - being rich, hot or happy will make others mad

Being a swim boss at 50 is kind of all three

Did you know that most of us are not physically symmetrical in some way?
Whether one bigger foot, a scar, skin condition, or bone irregularity
Perhaps different colors of your hair in the same patch
Or a once-broken nose that never healed right

Many scenarios or afflictions can and will lead us
To non-perfectly-symmetrical versions of ourselves
Do you pick on yourself for being non-perfectly-symmetrical?
Do you pretend that is a flaw or imperfection? Because it's natural

Sorry to break it to you, friend
If you hadn't noticed already
I hope you're okay with it

Being imperfect is not all bad
It frees us from the pressure
Of having to be whatever

Be you, boo

Especially In swim
Build up your arms and shoulders
In order to best pull yourself through water

That is a simple description for a very complicated activity
That has way more ways to do the activity wrong (injury) than right (painless)
I met a guy swimming with one arm after having a stroke paralyze half his body

Remember if you are doing this for weight loss
Weight is best controlled in the kitchen first
And only then next in the gym
I might have said that before

It's time for your sponge bath
This is a very special perk
We offer for swimmers
Who make their 40/40

You think I'm joking?
Be the person who can do it
And just see who shows up in your life

MoneyPenny: You will be rewarded greatly

Swimmers only, please
You look exhausted!
Get to the Choppa

First let me check your vitals

Lesson Summary

Motivation can vary greatly depending on whether you are merely posing or actually achieving something. Being labeled a "poser" was a significant insult in past generations. What you can do outweighs how you appear, showcasing a divergence between true capability and mere appearance.

  • High-impact activities involve jumps or risks of collision, unlike swimming, which is more peaceful.
  • "Poses" are integral to yoga, aiding in healing rather than misrepresentation.
  • Injuries can occur in supposedly low-impact exercises like swimming if done incorrectly.
  • Striving towards a goal without caring about appearance is a common trait among athletes.
  • Athleticism stems from trying challenges, not inherent talent.

Three qualities can bring unwarranted criticism: health-wealth, looks, and happiness. Being rich, attractive, or content can trigger envy in others.

  • Physical imperfections are common and should not be perceived as flaws.
  • Swimming efficiently necessitates building arm and shoulder strength.
  • Weight loss is primarily managed in the kitchen before the gym to be effective.

Swimmers achieving specific milestones may receive unique rewards, emphasizing the significance of effort and dedication in swimming.
